Xmas slots are a popular niche, though not usually in the spring, which is when I’m writing this review. Play N Go have used the same game setup which is used in Lady of Fortune and several others for this game - creating a lavish looking game without any significant breakout features. For me this slot looks good, though misses the spirit of Xmas from two potential directions. It misses the seasonal joy, and also misses the gifts – not having a jackpot or huge prize potential.
What you do get is the ability to win with 3 on a line starting in any position (not always on the left hand reel). A multiplier wild, which can increase your wins up to 5x, and a pick-em bonus game where you get to open a present to see how many coins you have won.
Graphics are detailed, including Santa, candles, bells, reindeers and candy. They are almost too lavish to fit on a slot; embellishments include bows, gold frames and baubles. There are some basic animations, for example sparkling gifts and steaming mulled wine. The music is a generic Xmas type tune, which neither impresses nor imposes too much.
The only break from standard game-play is when you get 3 gifts on the screen. You pick one of these to receive your prize. It is possible to get wins of up to 5x the amount in the pay table via one of the wild multiplier symbols.
Setup and Play for Merry Xmas
The standard 15 line Play N Go setup is in use with this game. You can choose any number of lines and up to 5 coins per line. With the minimum 1c coin value and 1 coin per line you can spin for 15c. At the other end you can spend $18.75c if your bankroll is big enough. Auto-play and gamble after win are both included in the setup.
As you might expect, Santa himself is the best of the regular symbols in this game. 5 of these will get you 2500 coins, with 250 coins for just 4. The reindeer comes next with 1000 coins for 5, and the Xmas tree decoration follows with 500 for 5. There are no playing card symbols in this game. The smaller wins come from bells, candles, wine and candy.
The wild symbol is extra welcome – since this has a multiplier of between 2x and 5x associated with it. Combining Santa with the best of the wilds can give you a top potential win of 12500 coins.
Merry Xmas Bonus Feature
Getting 3 gifts on the screen triggers the simple bonus game on this slot. These appear on reels 1, 3 and 5. If you get the first one the middle reel speeds up, then again for the 5th reel. All 3 then expand and cover the middle of the reels. Your only task is to choose one of them, which reveals your prize.
Once your prize is revealed, you’ll see what the others were. One of these is always very low compared to the others, with the biggest prize usually 5000 coins+ (based on my 75c spins).
Merry Xmas Slot – Conclusion
This slot is nice enough in its own way – though for me it misses some big opportunities. First to add a little more festive fun, and second to really give the potential for a big gift – for example a progressive jackpot of some kind.
On the plus side, this game is professionally designed, and it is hard to fault the Play N Go signature smooth game play. If you are looking for a basic Xmas slot that will not get overly intensive, then this could be a great pick.
